FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT RECRUITMENT

+ WHAT IS COB/WHAT DOES COB STAND FOR?

COB (Continuous Open Bidding) is an informal recruitment process that sororities who do not reach quota after Formal Recruitment will participate in. The main difference between COB and Formal Recruitment is that during COB, you do not have to meet with each chapter before committing. NOT ALL sororities will COB, so we recommend participating in Formal Recruitment to the fullest extent.

+ WHAT ARE SORORITIES LOOKING FOR?

Fraternities and sororities are committed to developing leaders, as well as personal and professional growth. During recruitment, Panhellenic chapters are looking for new members who are excited to get involved on campus/in chapter.

+ HOW MANY PANHELLENIC SORORITIES ARE AT CSUF?

There are six amazing chapters on our campus! In alphabetical order: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Zeta, Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Kappa, and Zeta Tau Alpha.

+ HOW DO I DECIDE WHICH CHAPTER IS BEST FOR ME?

When deciding which chapter is the best for you, ask yourself these questions to guide you:

  • Which group of women can I see myself prospering with?
  • Who do I feel the most comfortable going to when I need a shoulder to cry on?
  • Which chapter do I consider a home away from home?

Remember that each sorority is unique and through this process you will see which chapter is the best for you! Being genuine and truly yourself during recruitment will lead to the house best for you.

+ WHAT IS EXPECTED OF ME AS A “NEW MEMBER” OF A SORORITY?

New Members can expect weekly chapter meetings, philanthropy events, social events, and sisterhood events. We encourage going beyond what is expected of you to be an exceptional community member and leader!

+ WILL EVERY WOMAN GOING THROUGH RECRUITMENT RECEIVE A BID FROM A CHAPTER?

While we hope every woman finds a chapter, in reality not everyone will find a match. We do try our best to provide an opportunity for involvement to any woman that is interested in joining CSUF Panhellenic.

+ WHAT IS BID PROMISING?

Bid promising is when someone usually a member of a sorority or fraternity, implies or guarantees a bid (an invitation to join) to a potential new member (PNM) before the official recruitment process is over. It's a big no-no in Panhellenic recruitment because it goes against the values of fairness and mutual selection.

+ RECRUITMENT TERMS TO BE FAMILIARIZED WITH:

There are a lot of recruitment terms that can feel like a new language at first! Here's a list of key recruitment terms that PNMs (Potential New Members) should get familiar with before going through Panhellenic recruitment:

  • PNM (Potential New Member): You! Anyone going through recruitment but not yet affiliated with a sorority.

  • Chapter: A local branch of a national sorority on your campus.

  • Bid: A formal invitation to join a sorority.

  • Recruitment Guide (Rho Gamma): An upperclass woman who is temporarily disaffiliated from her sorority to help guide PNMs through recruitment.
